LimeSurvey training: from the questionnaire to an analysis that holds up.

LimeSurvey is probably the most comprehensive open-source software for online surveys, employee surveys and data collection across public administration – free of charge, on your own server, compliant with data protection law. A systematic introduction saves you weeks of trial and error.

Training formats

Every format is available on site or online.

FormatWho it suitsTypical content
One-day course Beginners who want to get to their first survey quickly – and anyone who first needs an overview of what LimeSurvey can actually do. No prior experience required. How the interface works, building a survey, question types, activating & closing, export – a leg-up over the main obstacles. By arrangement also as a half day: a first look for anyone still unsure whether LimeSurvey is the right choice. For a productive start I recommend the full day.
Two-day course Teams who are expected to use LimeSurvey productively and independently. Additionally: LimeSurvey syntax (Expression Manager), conditional questions, input validation, participant management, tokens, analysis.
Three-day course Experienced users with complex survey projects. Additionally: templates, reusing questions, variables & tokens, plugins, individual support for your own project. The third day either goes deeper or provides more time for practice – whichever your team needs.
Online delivery Every format, wherever people are – particularly for distributed teams and multiple sites. Not a course of its own but an option for every row in this table. My recommendation: two blocks of 3.5 hours per training day. Either across two days – so your team can practise in between and collect questions – or on one day with a long lunch break. Both are more focused than seven hours in front of a screen in one go.
Short or advanced course Up to 4 hours – as a taster, or to go deeper into single topics after a basic course.
  • Controlling a survey: tokens, reminder emails, anonymity
  • Analysis & export: LimeSurvey’s own analysis tools, exporting the raw data, analysis in R or Excel
  • LimeSurvey syntax: in-depth practice with conditions, operators, placeholders, validation
  • Working efficiently: editing many questions at once, versioning and backing up surveys, building templates, keeping an overview
  • Open question session on your current projects
Consulting time Bookable alongside a training course, for one or two people. Advice by phone or online on specific follow-up questions, billed per half hour started, available over several months. Not a substitute for training.
Working session One or two people with a project under way. At least half a day, split across two appointments if preferred. Working through your questionnaire together: not a lecture, but taking whatever is pending one item at a time. No previous training required.

We agree content and format by phone beforehand – participants are welcome to bring their own questions and ongoing projects. Training usually takes place on your organisation’s own LimeSurvey installation, so we can see straight away which version is running and which permissions your administrators have set, or should adjust afterwards. My own training instance works just as well; which makes more sense is something we settle in the preliminary call.

topics

Typical course content

  • How the interface works, what the software covers, and where it is used
  • Technical background and the building blocks of a survey
  • Building surveys, question types and conditional questions
  • LimeSurvey syntax (“Expression Manager”), equations and placeholders
  • Running a survey and managing participants
  • User administration and collaboration
  • Data export, analysis with Excel pivot tools and/or a result report inside LimeSurvey
  • Optional excursions: questionnaire design (avoiding the usual mistakes), automated result reports with R/R Markdown or Excel VBA, best practice – and using AI where it actually helps

why_despite_ai

Why learn LimeSurvey when there is AI?

Because the two belong together. I work with AI myself every day: phrasing questions, checking translations, writing analysis scripts – it is a serious help, and my courses show where it pays off.

The difference begins where suggestions turn into a survey that is actually running.

The survey website out of the chat. You can ask an AI to turn your Word document into an online questionnaire. You will get something that looks like a questionnaire. What stays open: where do the answers end up? Can you check whether they were stored completely – or do you end up downloading a table that merely looks plausible but is partly hallucinated? And if the scale flips at some point, so that the answer category “disagree” jumps from = 1 to = 5, nobody notices. The survey keeps running, the data are unusable, and you find out at the analysis stage – if at all. Exactly this kind of small thing happens once your AI no longer remembers the convention “disagree = 1”, because it dropped out of the context window long ago.

A tool constrains you – and that is precisely how it takes work off your hands. In LimeSurvey the response database is defined, anonymity is a setting rather than an assurance from an AI, the template has been tested, the export is traceable. None of that is yours to secure. And if you want to change a single word, you change it in the LimeSurvey interface – rather than instructing an AI to regenerate the whole survey website with that small change. Every regeneration leaves you hoping everything else stayed the same.

  • Control over your data: LimeSurvey runs on your server. In many public authorities and research institutions that is a precondition – and using AI cloud services with personal data is prohibited.
  • Being able to check it: anyone who knows LimeSurvey can assess AI-generated questionnaires and syntax expressions properly instead of trusting them blindly – and put AI to work where it does save effort: drafting an .lss file, for instance, which you then import. After that every question, every answer code and every condition is in front of you in the interface and can be checked one by one. The difference from a generated survey website is not that the AI makes no mistakes – it is that you find them. How editing and re-importing works in practice → (in German)
  • Lasting value: learned once, reused often: question groups, templates and analysis routines save time on every further survey. And a small change is something you make in the interface instead of having it generated afresh each time – which saves time, money and computing power.
  • Accessibility: increasingly a legal duty for public authorities. In the courses I pay attention to contrast, comprehensible wording and question types that remain usable with screen readers – which is not a substitute for a full accessibility audit.

why_i_teach

Why I give these courses

LimeSurvey can do an enormous amount – but it hides a fair bit of it. Even as someone comfortable with technology, I ran into obstacles early on that took me many hours to understand. Those are exactly the places I can get you past.

And one thing shows up again and again: even experienced users take something decisive away from the basic course – how to assign answer codes from the outset so that the later analysis comes easily, for instance. Or the model of levels that stops you ever getting lost in LimeSurvey again:

> str(survey)
Survey
└─ Question group
└─ Question
└─ Subquestion
└─ (Answer options)

# levels understood = never lost again

Trying LimeSurvey out

Would you like a look before the course? Two ways:

  • See every question type live: click through my demo survey containing all question types – that is how LimeSurvey questionnaires feel.
  • You do not need to install anything in advance: we normally work on your organisation’s installation, otherwise on my training instance. If you would like to set up a survey of your own, you can create a free account at limesurvey.org or install LimeSurvey on your own server – I am happy to advise on that.

And if you get stuck along the way: I have written short guides for the most common stumbling blocks – a questionnaire that starts in the middle, a session that expires, a condition that does not take effect. To the articles from everyday training practice → (in German)

support

When you get stuck: one session instead of many phone calls

I do not run a hotline. Instead we go through your survey together and work through whatever is pending, one item at a time, usually with the one or two people who are actually building the questionnaire. At the end your survey runs – and you know why.

The format for that is the working session (see training formats): I usually suggest setting aside half a day, split across two appointments if you prefer. No previous training required.

For short follow-up questions after a course, consulting time is available instead: by phone or online, over several months. It suits individual questions – anything that takes longer than a few minutes belongs in a working session.

faq

Frequently asked questions about how it works

Can the course be held online?

Yes, every format is available online as well. In that case I recommend two blocks of 3.5 hours per training day – either across two days, so your team can practise in between and collect concrete questions, or on one day with a long lunch break. Both are more focused than seven hours in front of a screen in one go.

Do participants need prior knowledge?

No. The basic courses assume no previous experience at all. For advanced courses I recommend that participants have attended at least one LimeSurvey course beforehand.

How many people can take part?

Up to 6 participants in the standard format, so that everyone gets to work through their own exercises. Larger groups are perfectly possible and are quoted individually – simply state the expected group size in your enquiry. On request everyone receives a personal certificate of attendance.

Which LimeSurvey installation is used for training?

Your organisation’s own installation, so that your team learns directly in the environment it will work in later, with your templates and permissions. Training on my server is possible by arrangement, for instance if your installation is not ready yet.
